White Rayon PFD (prepared for dyeing)
Christine
Elliott's first attempt at dyeing our PFD Solid White rayon
was a resounding success! She used very weak dye baths as she
did not want too intense a color. Says Christine, "I love
your fabric and look forward to working more and more with
it."

Carol
Heist loves to dye fabric and sew it into fabulous garments! Here
she has taken our PFD white rayon for the Cool Touch top and
dyed it a gorgeous magenta specially to go with the Plum Crinkle. She
shortened the top and straightened the hemline.

Carol dyed our PFD white rayonthe tunic's right front a pretty
mint green, then stamped the "branches" image onto it in black. The
rest of the tunic is our White Branches rayon batik.

Using the Batik Butik PFD (prepared
for dyeing) rayon was a real joy. As a fiber artist for the past
22 years I have searched far and wide for quality PFD rayon but
never found one that I would call high quality
at least
not until I found this rayon from The Batik Butik.
- Janet Pray, President of Islander Sewing Systems
Janet created the fun, colourful shirts at the left
from Batik Butik's solid white rayon. Here's how she did it:
1. I first start by putting the cloth in a
low immersion dye bath of Procion dyes (I used MX series from Pro-Chemical.)
Wash and dry fabric.
2. Then with silk-screens that I had made,
I placed a design image, like a palm tree, using a product called
Presist (purchased from Dharma Trading.) This resists the next
application of dye, sealing in the image color.
3. Finally I applied the thickened dye onto
the surface. Wash and dry fabric. When the Presist is washed away
it reveals the silk-screened image.
4. Once I am happy with my surface design,
I cut out the shirt and stitch it up. These samples were made from
my own pattern, The
Islander Shirt #208.
"Anyone interested in learning more about
dyeing natural fabrics, I highly recommend the book Complex Cloth
by Jane Dunnewold.
It is perfect for beginners and intermediate fiber artists." |
Kayla Kennington talks about dyeing our rayon:

When Bernina asked
me to design and stitch a logo for their new Bernina Stitch Regulator
(BSR), the 'I'm Free' lady was
born. I knew I needed a fabric with a high quality weave that would take the
stitches beautifully and when enlarged to
booth-size (8 X 10 feet) would hold up to visual scrutiny.
I used a 1.5 mm (tiny) stitch length and since the embroidery was free-motion
stitches, I needed to be sure that the needle
would stitch exactly in the place I intended it. My experience from sewing garments
from The Batik Butik rayon convinced
me that I needed to use their fabric for this project.
The 'lady's' face is the size of a fingernail so one little stitch in the wrong
place would change her whole expression and I
couldn't risk that. Heaven forbid I'd stitch a grouchy 'free lady'!
On dyeing this rayon: "Bernina had a particular background color in mind
for the "I'm
Free logo" I designed for them, and because I had dyed The
Batik Butik rayon fabric before, I knew I could be sure to get
the exact color without much effort. And that's exactly what happened!

I
must say that I am very delighted and happy with the quality of your
solid white rayon. It is really a joy to work with and takes the colors
beautifully. We use the fabric to make scarves, garments and wall hangings.
Thank you very much for the very good and efficient service you provided.

I have dyed your white rayon
with fabulous results! The color intensity is as rich as those of your
fabulous prints. And the "hand" of your fabric is so much
finer than that of any of the PFD house fabrics. It is exciting to
find fabric as nice as this for my dyeing and printing play.
